Picture yourself in your kitchen. If you’re like me, you are surrounded by all the foods and tools that you use daily to create a space for healthy eating. As I look around, I’m familiar with the foods I see around me. I know their approximate WW point/calorie value. I’m used to combining them to make point—or calorie-friendly meals. I feel comfortable making choices here.
Now, continue using your imagination, and picture yourself seated at a holiday meal prepared by someone else. The lids are on the dishes. What’s in those pans? Are they foods I like? Are they point/calorie friendly? Oh no! Now I smell homemade rolls!
Wow! Let’s get out of our imagination and back to reality. Guess what? You just used the tool called visualization for your weight loss success.
In one scene, we were comfortable, but not so comfortable in the next scene. Visualization for weight loss is practicing or rehearsing for a meal, holiday gathering, or event outside our “Yes” environment.

Understanding Visualization
Visualization is a tool you probably use already but don’t realize it. I was already using this tool, but I was using it wrong! I would visualize an event and see all the potential food choices, then see myself either in a panic or making all the unhealthy choices.
By changing the mental dialogue, I prepared for events that could potentially wreck my plans and weight loss goals. I regularly began practicing visualization or mental imagery, which was a game changer.
I discovered I could use this concept to make good choices in an unfamiliar zone. That made me feel peace, joy, and contentment while attending any event or gathering.
The Science Behind Visualization for Weight Loss
Studies have shown that by mentally visualizing ourselves and making good choices, we activate areas in the brain as though we had seen the situation with our physical eyes. If you are like me, I can visualize many situations that end in a food disaster. But that can be changed!
Research has shown that we process our emotions better using visualization than explaining. If you want to dive deeper into the science behind visualization, you can check out this visualization article.
Benefits of Visualization in Weight Loss
We begin taking control when we change those negative scenarios and visualize a “yes zone” in unfamiliar environments. It takes practice. But it’s one of the most valuable tools I have. Visualization has helped me lose and maintain a 360+ lb weight loss.
I can confidently approach an unfamiliar zone. The feeling of being in control while surrounded by food is very empowering.
I’d love to tell you how I use visualization. You will gain trust and confidence in your abilities. Let’s get you on the road to having a form of self-control that can lead you to success.
Crafting Your “YES Zone” Through Visualization
At the beginning of this article, we played a game of imagination. We visualized being comfortable in our yes zone at home. Then, we took a peek at a table spread with all kinds of foods that we had no control over preparing.
Defining Your YES Zone
In my YES zone, I have prepared my own food and have a pantry stocked with my “yes” foods. In other words, I’m playing on the home field. In this environment, maintaining focus and staying positive come much more easily.
Take a minute, using visualization, what does your YES zone look like?
Identifying Potential Difficult Situations
Conversely, consider what a food danger zone might look like. My danger zones are holiday gatherings, restaurant buffets, and event settings. Event settings are usually where we are triggered to eat food that was not even on our mind or radar. Think about movies and being triggered by the smell of popcorn.
Effective Visualization Techniques for Difficult Situations
When the holidays roll around, I think of the food I know will be there. An example would be a traditional Thanksgiving meal or Christmas meal. Let’s map out how to use visualizing.
Guided Imagery for Weight Loss Success
I know there will be turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, stuffing, casseroles, rolls, dessert, etc. Here’s my process of using visualization to make my YES zone. Of the foods, I visualize:
- Which ones are most important to me?
- Which foods can I do without?
- Which one or two desserts make the holiday for me?
- What foods can I prepare to add to the table I’m visualizing?
Creating a Vision Board for Your YES Zone
After visualizing and ranking the importance of the foods I am choosing to eat,
I like to write it down or even pre-track it on the day of the meal. This is another way to mentally “see” yourself meeting your goal.
Using a traditional Thanksgiving meal as our example, I visualize my plate having turkey breast, salad, green beans, stuffing (one of my must-haves), a roll, and a couple of small servings of casseroles.
When surveying the food and filling my plate, I’ve already decided I can do without mashed potatoes, corn, candied yams, etc. I’ve chosen the foods I wanted and tried a couple of new casseroles.
By pre-tracking what I anticipate to eat, I’ve learned to make a game out of it! Yes, we can have fun and meet our health goals. How closely did I follow my plan? I adjust my tracked foods as needed.
Practicing this technique helps me stay mindful of my goals. In this instance, my goal would be to make healthy choices while enjoying my chosen foods.
Affirmations and Positive Self-Talk
Another visualization I use is to focus on the actual event. I see the beauty of friends and family instead of the food. On my mental visualization board, the food is not the focus. The event and people move into first place. This also helps me stay mindful of my goals.
FAQs About Visualization for Weight Loss
What is the best way to use visualization for weight loss?
Visualization gives you confidence and sets you up for success. When you repeatedly “see” yourself making the choices you have mentally rehearsed, you become confident in your ability to make wise choices no matter your situation.
Does visualization work for weight loss?
Absolutely! This technique can be applied to many areas of life. Visualization helped me lose 360+ lbs, keep it off, and finally find freedom with food.
How long should I do visualization for weight loss?
I practice this technique regularly as it helps with stress anytime I’m in uncharted waters.
We all face different challenges and situations. Start practicing visualization on daily tasks. Practice it at a time of day or in a situation that’s sometimes hard for you. It doesn’t even have to be food-related.
For a long time, I was afraid to eat at a buffet! Once I mastered seeing myself make wise choices, I became in charge. I could walk past foods and confidently say, “I’d rather eat this instead,”…” One dessert is a treat,”…” I don’t want seconds”.
Let me know in the comments if you practice this technique or are willing to try it.
